What’s Wrong With Your LinkedIn Profile

I reviewed hundreds of LinkedIn profiles.
Most people are making the same 5 mistakes.

I wrote down my observations so you can learn from it too and optimize yours.

1. You are still not being clear about what it is you do, whom you do it for, and what makes you unique. You just post a random combination of subjects on this platform and hope something works. You think a post with lots of likes means you're doing well, because you're haven't defined your DNA, nor what success looks like.

2. Many job seekers do nothing but posting they are looking for a job. Or they don't post at all and just send in applications. That is a crucial mistake. You should be sharing knowledge, offer value and showcase your expertise. Both on your profile and in other people's comments' section. This is how you will grow your visibility and reputation, and how eventually recruiters might find you, or people in your network might approach you about jobs. And turn off that OpenForWork badge. It does more harm than good.

3. Many freelancers and small business owners are promoting themselves way too aggressively on their platform. Their posts are basically one big cold call. And who likes cold calls? Surprise: They get hardly any engagement at all, and no business coming from it. Instead, focus on positioning yourself as the go-to person in your field in a specific location. Share valuable information, around 3 times a week. Sooner than you think, you will get invited to podcasts and events around that topic. Your Linkedinfluence will grow. And then projects will come in. Because whenever anyone in your area will mention your niche, someone will mention your name.

4. Most banners s*ck. And that's a missed opportunity. It's free advertising space for everyone who clicked on YOU to learn more. Make it appealing. Make them want to find out more. (See yesterday’s post)

5. Many About sections are one horribly long, boring vomit of text: years, roles, generic buzzwords. It almost never answers: “Who do you help? With what specific problem? What happens when you do?” So do that, and turn it into a story that grabs your reader.

💾 Save this before you rewrite your profile or your next post. Do better in 2026.
